What to do on Hvar Island

Hvar: the word is originated from ” Pharos ” ancient name of the colony founded by Greeks in 384 B.C. The island was occupied by Illiyri and later by the Romans who subjected all Dalmatia changing the name of Pharos in Pharia . The economy of island was based on the cultivation of vineyards and fishing trade but rich merchants built villas in Hvar and Jelsa . After the fall of the Roman Empire, Hvar was under the control of Croatians Kings and later of the Venetians. Then became part of the French Empire and later passed under the Austian supremacy. In 1918 the island was conquered by Italians but in 1921, after the Treaty of Rapallo, Hvar was definitively integrated into the Serbo Croatian Kingdom which became Yugoslavia after World War II. Just in 1992, after several wars between communities, finally became Republic Of

Croatia.
